Showing Sustainable Leadership in Education

Under the leadership of Dean Marion Debruyne, Vlerick Business School has intensified its focus on sustainability. The Financial Times recently recognized Vlerick for its efforts in incorporating sustainability into its EMBA. However, they infuse sustainable practices and thinking into all their MBA programs. Courses immerse students in the complexities of sustainability, from renewable energy to ethical management and beyond.

The Dean’s vision for a sustainable future is evident throughout the school’s strategic initiatives, including releasing their Sustainability Report 2023
The report underscores a commitment to integrating sustainability into Vlerick’s educational and operational ethos with three key initiatives.

Firstly, the school aims to influence sustainability practices through comprehensive research and educational programs that integrate sustainability into curricula. Secondly, it focuses on creating an accessible and diverse community by providing scholarships and nurturing a supportive environment. Lastly, the school commits to “walking the talk” by implementing policies to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance its sustainability.

A Strategic Approach to Increase Sustainability Impact

In the domain of sustainability, prioritization is key. Recognizing that every part of an organization can contribute to sustainable practices, the school embarked on a mission to maximize its impact.

Vlerick invited stakeholders to rank the importance of identified areas to ensure that these efforts align with broader expectations. This approach ensures the school’s sustainability initiatives are strategically targeted and resonate with the values and priorities of its community.

Impacting Sustainability through Research and Education

Vlerick Business School has integrated sustainability into the core of its educational and research frameworks. The research strategy embraces four fundamental principles: rigor, relevance, reach, and responsibility.

The school boasts several research initiatives specifically focused on sustainability issues. These projects tackle a wide range of topics, from sustainable finance and circular economy to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and green logistics.  Additionally, the Sustainability Research Centre is a collaborative hub for academics, business leaders, and sustainability experts to exchange knowledge and foster change.

This approach fosters credible and ethical research whose findings are accessible and actionable for the business community and society.

A benefit for students is that professors can embed insights directly within their curriculum as they develop research that empowers leaders to tackle real-life sustainability challenges.

“They know as much about what the latest research says as they know about what’s going on in companies. They bring these insights into the classroom, whether that classroom is on campus or online,” Dean Marion says. (00:48)

Because courses are infused with the latest sustainability insights, students learn how to connect profit with purpose. As graduates, they can influence and innovate within their industries and governments, promoting a ripple effect that extends beyond the classroom.Influenced by their experiences at Vlerick, alumni lead sustainable transformations in various sectors, from multinational corporations to innovative startups. Furthermore,  by providing seed funding, the Student Entrepreneurship Fund bridges ambition and realization for students and alumni with entrepreneurial ventures.

Building an Accessible and Diverse Community

One of the most significant impacts of Vlerick’s sustainability agenda is seen in its diverse student body. Students from around the globe bring their unique perspectives to the Belgian school, enriching discussions and fostering a multinational approach to solving sustainability challenges.

Dean Marion says, “At our city campuses in the heart of Europe, you’ll meet people from all over the world.” (00:33)

Education is a powerful tool for change, and Vlerick ensures that this tool is accessible to a broad audience. The school champions diversity by offering scholarships and cultivating an environment of respect and inclusion where diverse ideas can flourish. This cultural diversity enriches learning experiences and prepares students to operate in a global business environment

As the journey to sustainability requires collaboration, Vlerick actively partners with industry leaders, non-profits, and governmental bodies extending its reach into the broader community.

These partnerships facilitate a two-way flow of knowledge, so the school’s activities are both informed by and contribute to the global sustainability agenda.

Walking the Talk as a Sustainable Organization

Vlerick’s commitment to sustainability permeates its operations. The school has implemented numerous green initiatives within its campuses, including energy-efficient buildings, waste reduction programs, and sustainable sourcing practices.

Looking forward, the school plans to further integrate digital innovations into its teaching methods, expand its research capabilities, and strengthen its global partnerships. Each step reinforces its role as a leader in sustainable business education.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to set an example for students and staff alike.

By integrating sustainability into its research and education, opening doors to a diverse range of students, and exemplifying ethical and sustainable operations, Vlerick Business School is a model for sustainable leadership.
