Expanding Your Academic Horizons: Study for an MBA in Asia

Amid geopolitical unrest, more international students are now choosing to pursue an MBA in Asia. Global student mobility is shifting, and Asia offers incredible new opportunities to learn at the intersection of East and West. This global exposure to new markets is becoming increasingly crucial for building international careers.

For those seeking an international career abroad and looking to broaden their business perspective, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) – ranked No.11 worldwide and No.1 in Asia in QS World University Rankings 2026 – stands out as a top choice.

In an interview with MBAGRADSCHOOLS, Full-time MBA students Julia Bratland, Michael Junhe Cai, and Cindy Jiang share how HKU’s experiential learning has shaped their academic journeys.

What Makes HKU Experiential Learning Unique?

The HKU Full-time MBA is a one-year intensive program in Hong Kong. It stands out for its experiential learning focus and forward-looking curriculum. Students engage with real business problems from day one. Experiential learning elements include the Corporate Partnership Project, Executive Development Workshops, and a China Immersion Program.

AI Integration and Asia At the Forefront

Julia, a Danish-Norwegian student, shares, “Two things really jump out to me. One thing is the integration of and focus on AI… and the other thing is obviously the focus on Asia. We’ve done a lot of case work with Asian companies and met a lot of Asian business leaders, which has really been a unique learning experience, especially as someone coming from Europe.” (00:51)

Exceptional Career Support

For Michael, a Chinese student, the focus on career development and career training was a major draw. He was impressed by the personal coaching students receive from experienced Career Mentors. Three-time winners of the #1 Careers Service Rank in Hong Kong by the Financial Times Global Ranking (from 2023-2025), the HKU MBA Career Development & Training (CDT) Team is the best in class.

Real World Touch on Core Curriculum

For Cindy, a Canadian student, the mix between theory and real-world practice was what she was looking for. HKU stood out for its “real world touch”. She says, “I think that the curriculum makes an effort for us to understand what the most recent thing is in the market, so that for some of us who’ve worked for a while, we can still catch up with the current trend.” (02:29)

Students gain real-world career insights from experienced industry professionals and learn about cutting-edge AI and technology trends. This practical approach makes the program highly relevant for today’s global market.

Blending Global Business Knowledge with Local Experiences

Another key strength of HKU’s Full-time MBA is its deep focus on Asia, specifically on China. During the first 8 months in Hong Kong, students gain unique cultural insights and local networking opportunities that are difficult to find elsewhere.

Students completed core courses in Finance, Marketing, Digital Innovation, Business Ethics, Analytics, Competitive Strategy, and Global Economy. The core courses blend global knowledge with local expertise through a case-based approach to learning.

Students gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese work culture and economy. For example, their class went on a trip to visit leading global companies in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen — including tech giant Tencent, electric vehicle pioneer NIO, consulting powerhouse Bain & Company, luxury conglomerate Richemont, insurance leader Allianz Global Investors, fintech giant UnionPay International, and toy innovator the LEGO Group. Cindy particularly valued the impact of how these companies evolved into technology-driven giants. Julia says the trip was a “big eye-opener”.

For local students like Michael, the immersive activities were a chance for him to connect with his peers and build deeper friendships. “It’s more like a family,” Michael shares about his cohort. (06:17)

It is impossible to do business outside of the context of local culture and business practices. By understanding these nuanced contexts, professionals get a head start.

HKU blends local experiences with Executive Development Workshops to ensure students understand the hard and soft skills needed to thrive in global business, no matter where they choose to work.

The Importance of Diversity in the Classroom

In global business environments, you need to embrace different cultures to collaborate effectively, foster teamwork, and deliver results. HKU’s diverse cohorts and small class sizes prepare MBA candidates for exactly that. The 2024-2025 cohort had 94% international students and included candidates from 19 regions.

Julia notes, “Having a small, tight, and very diverse cohort was actually one of the main reasons why I chose HKU, and I really think it has shaped my experience.” (06:47)

As someone who has worked in the finance industry for five years, Michael particularly enjoys the exposure to new industries. He explains, “It offers me better exposure to the business world and to think deeper about my future career.” (08:03)

Cindy appreciates the interactive classroom setting and small class sizes. She adds, “Our class is diverse not just from a culture perspective but also from a work experience perspective… I really liked that I was able to connect with everyone in the class and learn from them at the same time.” (08:38)

This diverse and engaging environment helps MBA candidates build their communication, teamwork, and cross-cultural leadership skills. These skills are now a “must” rather than a “nice to have” for international careers.

How the HKU Full-time MBA Opens Doors to Global Opportunities

In the final stages of their MBA program, students have the opportunity for global exposure through the international study track at LBS, CBS, or PKU. They can spend three to four months completing elective courses in London, New York, or Beijing. Alternatively, they can choose to stay in Hong Kong.

Julia will be travelling to London Business School (LBS) to complete her electives. She highlights, “I’m very excited to take classes from LBS on both strategy and AI and see how that compares to things I’ve learned here at HKU.” (11:53) This duality offers a well-rounded global perspective.

Michael mirrors this sentiment. He will also be studying at LBS. He reflects, “I’m really looking forward to exploring new things in London as well as in Europe.” (12:18) As with the China Immersion Program for internationals, the international study track allows local students to immerse themselves in a different culture abroad.

Cindy chose to stay in Hong Kong and looks forward to further exploring the region. She underscores, “I really like the bridge that HKU built between Hong Kong and the greater Bay Area. This is where the new tech is on the mainland, and how that connects to the finance part of Hong Kong really impressed me… these are opportunities I would not have on my own.” (12:34) Cindy plans to leverage HKU’s local industry connections and business networking opportunities.

The HKU Full-time MBA gives students a lot of control over their MBA experience. Every student can choose their own elective courses and where they want to complete them. They can tailor their MBA experience to match their career goals.

Experience Personal & Professional Growth at HKU

Ultimately, the HKU Full-time MBA has a multi-faceted approach. It blends HKU’s signature experiential learning, development training, global exposure, and case-based learning to help MBA candidates make great strides in their careers.

Each student has a different takeaway from the program. For Julia, it was greater confidence in delivering AI strategies. Regarding her strategic and leadership skills, she feels more self-assured in an international and multi-industry context. She summarizes, “It’s such a sped-up version of what you get in most ordinary workplaces.” (14:07)

Michael felt the program helped him get out of his comfort zone. He now feels greater confidence in his presentation and public-speaking skills.

Moreover, he developed strong networking skills. He highlights, “Now when I’m at networking events, I’m more assertive and feel more comfortable when building connections with people.” (14:27)

In Cindy’s case, the MBA program strengthened her mindset. She explains, “I have become an even more open-minded person… I feel like I’m even more calm and more excited about the new types of opportunities I can have in the market.” (14:47) She feels secure in her AI skills and knows how to best leverage them in her career. She feels excited about her career prospects rather than worried about her future.

Each student has taken something different out of the program experience. Nonetheless, they are each fortified by HKU experiential learning, new experiences, and skills. Equipped with the right toolkit and mindset, they will leave prepared for a global career that transcends borders.
