But what makes the program truly stand out to MBA students? The chance to further personalize their learning experience through Nyenrode MBA electives.

We sat down with Karlijn Nijboer, the Senior Program Manager of the Impact MBA at Nyenrode, to explore how Nyenrode MBA electives empower students to tailor their studies and shape their future career path.

Your MBA, Your Way: The Impact MBA Electives

The elective courses in the Impact MBA are designed to deepen core knowledge and expand leadership competencies.

Karlijn explains, “The electives help to deepen the core course. For example, Entrepreneurial Finance, Digital Transformation, and AI, or you can think of electives to expand leadership competencies, like Business Ethics.” (00:40)

Current Nyenrode MBA electives include:

  • Corporate Governance and Business Ethics
  • Entrepreneurial Finance: Navigating Risk and Opportunity
  • Building Sustainable Businesses: Legal Foundations in International and EU Context
  • Digital Transformation and AI.

It is important to keep in mind that the selection of electives can change from year to year. Overall, the electives evolve alongside current business trends, ensuring students are always learning what matters most to today’s employers.

Staying Ahead of the Sustainability and AI Curve

Every core module in the Impact MBA is framed through two lenses: sustainability and digital transformation. This prepares students for the complexities of executive leadership in a rapidly evolving world.

The Digital Transformation and AI elective takes the focus one step further. It explores how AI applies across every business function, from marketing and HR to financial analysis.

What keeps this elective relevant is the caliber of faculty delivering it. Karlijn shares, “Faculty members combine their academic positions with practice-oriented positions. As a digital strategy consultant, for instance. This way, we can keep up with AI trends.” (01:26)

Faculty bring real-world insights and practical experience into the classroom. This ensures that students learn how AI is actually being used in organizations right now, not just the theory behind it.

Inside the Nyenrode MBA Electives: Structure and Global Reach

The Nyenrode Impact MBA is a 68-ECTS program with two elective credits (worth 2 ECTS each) built directly into the curriculum. Most electives are delivered on campus. The electives include classes, course preparation, and an assignment.

Additionally, in collaboration with the International Office, Nyenrode University offers international elective opportunities through partner universities. The electives abroad fall outside of the official curriculum but remain available to MBA students.

Previous electives abroad have taken place in Vietnam, Costa Rica, Mexico, and beyond. Karlijn adds, “It can be of great added value to the learning journey of our participants… it’s very widespread around the globe.” (03:11)

Whether you choose to do your electives in picturesque Breukelen or at an exciting location abroad, there is something for everyone.

Explore Your Interests With a Personalized MBA

The Impact MBA leverages transformative learning with a strong emphasis on personalization. It follows a “head, heart, hands” approach. The theoretical learning is supplemented by real-world application and industry insights.  Not to mention the interests and goals of each MBA student.

Course assignments are rooted in real business challenges that students have faced or will face. Additionally, the final thesis (14 ECTS) is another opportunity for students to explore their personal interests and to further personalize their Impact MBA experience.

Beyond that, the Nyenrode MBA electives reinforce further personalization. Karlijn elaborates, “The electives reinforce this personalization of education by deepening courses and expanding also the range of competencies that they can develop. During the Full-time Impact MBA, these are opportunities to choose areas of business that you’re interested in, and this will also reflect on your diploma… when looking for a job in a specific market, it gives you the opportunity to show your colors and what makes you unique.” (04:25)

Through these various elements, Impact MBA students can make the most of their MBA experience, tailoring it to their personal interests and shaping their future career path.
