What is Career Switching? Why is it Happening Now?

Talent development specialist, Darcy Roehling, from the HEC Talents team, highlights that career switching is no easy feat in today’s world. The world of work is changing in real time.

“We are living through a fundamental reset in how people think about work. The pandemic accelerated it. The climate crisis is certainly deepening it. And AI is reshaping entire industries almost overnight.” (00:26)

She spoke with MBAGRADSCHOOLS about how the right degree can bridge the gap between where professionals are and where they want to be.

Within this new landscape, many professionals are switching roles, pivoting industries, and changing geographies multiple times within their careers. And these career switchers are seeking out MBA programs that can offer support and clear frameworks to help them make these changes.

Darcy tells us why the HEC Paris MBA stands out as a top choice for career switchers. HEC Paris, based in Jouy-en-Josas in France, has built an MBA program around exactly this type of career shift.

Finding Your Career Path in a Changing World

Professionals rethinking their career paths early in their careers are asking themselves key questions: “Is this the right direction? Is there somewhere where I can have more impact?”

However, being self-reflective is not enough to succeed. Darcy says that the most successful career switchers are those who act strategically. They understand how to connect their work history with their future career aspirations into a ‘compelling story’.

She adds, “Employers, at this juncture, are not looking for a blank slate. They are looking for someone who can bring genuine experience and perspective to a new context. And that is exactly what we help our MBA participants articulate and own at HEC Paris.” (01:05)

By fostering a strategic mindset and with targeted career support, HEC Paris helps MBA candidates navigate their career transitions with confidence.

Why Europe Is a Magnet for MBA Career Changers

HEC Paris’s location in central Europe is a unique selling point. Europe offers a blend of cultures, languages, geographies, and broad work opportunities.

Darcy highlights, “The European business landscape is extraordinarily diverse. We have major financial hubs in London and Frankfurt, thriving tech ecosystems in Berlin and Amsterdam, luxury and culture anchored in Paris and Milan, and a powerful sustainability agenda running across the entire continent.” (01:47)

There are various benefits to working in Europe. It offers an excellent quality of life, a strong work-life balance, and a variety of work opportunities across diverse sectors.

More specifically, Paris is well-connected to other major business hubs. As the capital of France, it sits at the crossroads of finance, sustainability, luxury, tech, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, Paris is home to Station F, the world’s largest startup campus.

This makes HEC Paris an ideal study location for MBA candidates who are keen to build their global network and be fully immersed in a different culture.

The HEC Paris MBA Opens Doors

HEC Paris stands out for the diverse career paths of their MBA graduates. Their graduates go into consulting, finance, and technology. They also enter into entrepreneurship, healthcare, and sustainability. This breadth is intentional. The MBA program aims to open doors to a variety of job roles and industries rather than pushing a “one size fits all” narrative.

Overall, the HEC Paris MBA program takes 16 months to complete. While this is longer than the typical 12-month European standard, it was deliberately designed this way.

Darcy explains, “It gives participants the time and space to actually explore, to sit with uncertainty and curiosity, and to build real conviction about where they are headed.” (03:31) For those who prefer an accelerated path, those in the January cohort can complete a 12-month track.

The HEC Paris MBA is an excellent choice for career changers, and the numbers speak for themselves. According to the 2025 Employment Report, more than half of the MBA Class of 2025 made a career transition: 57% changed sector, 54% changed function, and 57% changed location. (08:40)

With 95% international participants representing 49 nationalities, the class also demonstrated remarkable global mobility, with 64% of graduates securing employment outside their home country after the MBA.

Top employers included Amazon, L’Oréal, Accenture, Microsoft, and Google, among others. These strong employment outcomes and the high rate of successful career switches speak for themselves.

A Support System for Your Career Journey

Do those career outcomes sound too good to be true or unattainable? The school offers the support, network, and resources to support you every step of the way. HEC Talents, the career center at HEC Paris, is part of everyone’s MBA journey. HEC Talents offers one-on-one coaching for every participant.

Moreover, HEC Paris MBA candidates become part of a network of 80,000 alumni across 152 countries. Their alumni community is active, generous, and truly global. The HEC Paris community offers both current students and recent graduates real and enduring support.

Darcy emphasizes, “We give you the platform, the cohort, the tools, and the ecosystem, but the transformation is yours to own.” (04:31)

With the right support system in place, achieving your biggest career goals becomes much more achievable.

Structured Career Support Built for Industry Pivots

Career development is central to the HEC Paris MBA experience. The HEC Talents team includes sector-based career coaches, an employer engagement team, and an events team. They bridge the gap between industry and academia on campus.

Notably, career coaching at HEC Paris is mandatory. The individual coaching sessions are built directly into the program, ensuring that each participant receives the help they need.

The program also includes 10 mandatory career workshops. These workshops cover pitch delivery, interview technique, networking skills, and job search strategy. There are 30 optional workshops available for those who want to dive deeper.

Candidates also join “treks,” which are short immersive trips to cities such as London, Amsterdam, Milan, and Dubai. On these trips, they can learn about new markets and meet employers and alumni in person.

In addition, HEC Paris hosts company presentations, networking events, and job fairs. The alumni mentoring programs offer additional mentorship. Alumni-student pairs meet every six weeks for check-ins.

The MBA program curriculum also includes two internship windows. MBA participants can intern in their target sector and gain real-world experience. This adds credibility when pivoting industries later on.

The multi-faceted support and clear frameworks for career development ensure that MBA candidates take active steps in their career journey.
