Andreia Ferreira is an experienced Career Consultant at Imperial College Business School, guiding MBA students toward career success. She specializes in career coaching, industry insights, and leveraging AI tools to enhance job search strategies.
Andreia states, “The career and professional development offered here at Imperial College Business School is designed with high levels of flexibility and personalization. And that’s precisely to cater to the huge diversity of profiles, backgrounds, and career goals of our MBA students.” (00:14)
With a deep understanding of global job markets, she helps students build strong networks and secure top opportunities after graduation.
Personalized Career Support at Imperial College Business School
Each Full-Time MBA student is paired with a dedicated Career Consultant, providing personalized support in leadership development, personal growth, and self-reflection. Career guidance begins up to four months before the program starts, giving students ample time to prepare and maximize the support available. To ensure coaching remains relevant and impactful, the Careers Team regularly engages in industry training, staying ahead of evolving recruitment trends and sharing up-to-date market insights throughout the journey.
During their time at Imperial College Business School, students complete Imperial’s Personal Leadership Journey (PLJ), a Careers-led module designed to equip participants with essential skills for success as global professionals. Through workshops, reflective exercises, and one-on-one meetings, it fosters personal and professional development.
Participants focus on four key areas:
- Personal impact and networking
- Executive communication
- Career management
- Leadership in a complex and connected world
The module also provides opportunities to connect with industry leaders and experts in relevant fields.
Career Clubs, Industry Connections, and Experiential Learning
MBA students gain insights throughout their experience at Imperial College Business School. Andreia explains, “Ensuring students are well prepared really means giving them the tools to future-proof their career. And that can be done through industry connections, access to insights on emerging trends, on sought-after skills, and then, of course, offer the opportunity for them to develop those skills.” (02:02)
One of the highlights of the year is Imperial’s MBA Careers Week. Dedicated to MBA students, it offers tailored support to help refine goals via workshops, coaching, and sector guidance. Highlights include:
- Job search strategies and LinkedIn optimization
- Interview skills and salary negotiation workshops
- Sector insights from industry panels and alumni talks
- Career planning for senior leadership roles
- Exploring careers in finance, sustainability, and entrepreneurship
- Enterprise Lab idea surgeries for budding entrepreneurs
- Networking opportunities, including the flagship MBA World Café
MBA students can join close to 20 career clubs, covering various sectors and regions. Andreia emphasizes, “Career clubs are a great opportunity for students to meet others with similar interests… to build up their industry knowledge…network with alumni and other professionals in the industry.” (12:14)
Leadership roles in these clubs enhance students’ value in the labor market. “For those that decide to take on a leadership position in the clubs, the clubs are a really clear opportunity to demonstrate to the market their interest in the area, their leadership experience, and of course, they do that through the strong connection that they build with relevant employers and organizations.” (12:34)
Andreia adds, “Students are encouraged to tap into resources, training events, connections, from these [sector-aligned] teams while they are exploring, applying, and interviewing.” (01:19)
These opportunities strengthen leadership skills, expand networks, and boost career growth.
Innovative Learning: From AI to Executive Stage Presence
With the job market evolving rapidly, diverse industries are adapting their processes to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI). To stay ahead and future-proof their careers, students need to cultivate strong industry connections that offer valuable insights into emerging trends and shifting expectations.
Imperial Business School integrates AI-powered tools into its career development programs. Andreia reports, “We’ve been using AI and machine-learning-powered tools, in the Careers [Team] specifically, since I joined Imperial a few years ago to support different elements of the career coaching and the job search preparation process.” (07:58)
This implementation of AI also assists the Careers Team in delivering high-quality support to the MBA cohorts. She adds, “These tools not only lead to an increase in efficiency in the team, but also elevate the career conversations to a different level.” (08:31)
Additionally, the Team attends industry conferences to track recruitment trends and share insights with students. AI enhances career support, ensuring high-quality guidance for MBA cohorts.
As part of this AI-assisted learning journey, MBA students also refine their pitching skills at the Royal College of Music’s Performance Laboratory, right next door to Imperial and one of its close institutional partners. Originally designed for musicians, this platform helps performers practice and develop their stage presence. Through real-time feedback, it helps business students to strengthen their executive communication skills and build confidence in high-impact presentations.
Imperial’s Unique Mentoring and Networking Initiatives
Imperial’s MBA mentoring and networking initiatives play a key role in supporting career transitions. Andreia highlights two initiatives in particular that she believes have a significant impact.
“The first one is the Full-Time MBA Mentoring Programme that is designed to support and accelerate students’ transition into and beyond Imperial College Business School, helping students to make the most of a one-year MBA program to achieve their career goals.” (04:33)
This program is divided into two stages:
- Stage One: Before the MBA begins, students receive guidance from recent alumni on structure, resources, and academics. This stage starts in the summer, helping students understand coursework, networking, and career planning. Early support ensures a smooth transition and informed decision-making.
- Stage Two: During the second half of the MBA, students are paired with senior alumni for industry-specific guidance and career strategy. These mentors provide insights on job roles, market trends, and leadership development. This stage helps students expand networks and navigate career paths effectively.
Additionally, the MBA World Café, their flagship networking event, provides opportunities for students to engage with alumni in different industries. She highlights, “It’s a very lively and informal evening and a great opportunity for alumni to give back to the community, identify talent for their own teams, and expand their own network.” (05:39)
Students gain industry insights, leadership skills, and valuable connections. These mentorship and networking initiatives help students navigate career transitions and achieve long-term success.
Global Career Opportunities for International Students
Imperial supports international students with visa guidance and job market insights. Andreia reflects, “Navigating visa regulations and employment sponsorship conversations in their job search and offer negotiation adds a lot of uncertainty to what is already a stressful process…ensuring students are well-informed of the options available from the very start of the journey is key.” (09:22)
International MBA students can apply for the UK Graduate Visa. Andreia explains, “They can, for example, consider a graduate visa that allows them to work in the country for two years without requiring an employer to sponsor them.” (09:40)
Imperial equips international students with career guidance and visa support, simplifying job searches and expanding global opportunities.
Lifetime Career Success: Exclusive Support for Imperial MBA Alumni
Imperial College Business School offers valuable lifelong career coaching to its alumni. “This opportunity to work with someone that really gets to know your journey, your goals, and your areas of development doesn’t end when the program finishes, but it’s highly encouraged in the first year after graduation.” (16:12)
MBA graduates receive continued career support after the program. They can meet a Careers Consultant to plan their next steps. In the first three years, they get five 60-minute appointments each year. After that, they can book two 60-minute appointments annually.
This support includes job search boot camps, alumni job listings, and career coaching for recent graduates. “Recent alumni also received lists of curated job opportunities and are encouraged to meet regularly with a dedicated Careers Consultant as they negotiate job offers and start their new roles.” (16:00)
Imperial ensures that alumni receive continuous career support for long-term success. These resources help graduates secure opportunities and grow professionally.
