Leading With Purpose, Resilience, and Responsibility
Modern business is constantly changing. What seems important today could be deemed irrelevant tomorrow in a world of economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
What is certain, however, is that disruptive technologies such as AI will lead the way. These technologies, together with a growing demand for ethical leadership, are vital for success. This sentiment has shaped the University of Southampton Business School’s approach to its Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Professor Behzad Hezarkhani is the school’s MBA Program Director. “Our MBA is designed for professionals who want to lead with a clear purpose,” he says. “It combines critical thinking with practical application.” (00:22)
For Professor Hezarkhani and his team, navigating complexity requires more than industry knowledge and technical skills. It requires ethical and reflective leadership.
Big Ideas, a Global Mindset, and a Singular Expertise
Based in the United Kingdom, the Southampton MBA curriculum grounds itself in business fundamentals. These are the ‘big ideas’ of modern business. They include operations management, data-driven decision making, and strategic leadership.
Then, included in the program are two international study trips to broaden perspectives, with destinations including the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands. Often live consultancy projects in an emerging market country accompany these trips.
Beyond these core concepts and overseas experiences, students personalize their learning experience with a specialist elective. There are six specialized pathways to choose from, yet two stand out when it comes to gaining the expertise to lead in a tech-driven world.
The Southampton MBA FinTech Pathway
This pathway is designed for students who want to understand the big themes shaping the world of finance. These include blockchain, digital currencies, artificial intelligence, and open banking.
Dr. Larisa Yarovaya is Director of the Centre for Digital Finance at the University of Southampton Business School. She explains how a strong MBA foundation and practical FinTech expertise prepare students for modern finance.
“Today, business leaders need more than traditional finance knowledge,” says Dr. Yarovaya. “They need to understand technology, data, regulation, and even human behavior.” (01:05)
As a result, the university’s Centre for Digital Finance has researched the complex relationship between finance and emerging technologies. Their findings help shape the FinTech pathway curriculum. “We have researched FinTech, cryptocurrencies, and artificial intelligence in finance for over a decade,” explains Dr. Yarovaya. “We’ve worked closely with industry and regulators.” (01:30)
In addition, the Centre for Digital Finance also organizes practical sessions, such as the AI in Business workshop, where students learn directly from industry experts. Whether you want to become a FinTech leader, start your own venture, or future-proof your career, this pathway gives you the skills, confidence, and connections to succeed.
The Southampton MBA Project Management Pathway
This pathway gives modern professionals the leadership skills to execute complex projects. Dr Nicholas Dacre, Associate Professor of Project Management and Director of the Advanced Project Management Research Centre oversees the program.
To execute projects effectively, employers want more than just strategic insight. As Dr. Dacre explains, “What they are looking for is people who can think critically and clearly; people who can innovate and lead; and, ultimately, people who can make good decisions in complex environments.” (02:09)
The MBA project management pathway prepares you to make decisions that are relevant under pressure. You’ll develop the ability to set out a clear vision and implement it across the entire project lifecycle. Furthermore, you’ll also discover how to harness AI and other tools. You’ll use them to improve planning, analysis, and reporting, while understanding their limits in real business. The aim, says Dr. Dacre, is not to replace judgment but to effectively strengthen it.
“Across the pathway, we will stretch your thinking beyond what you currently know, with support and challenge delivered in equal measure,” he explains. (03:10)
If you’re looking to become the kind of project leader that world-leading organizations trust with complex change and business challenges, this pathway is for you.
Become the Leader You Were Born to Be
The new era of business demands leaders who can navigate complexity and uncertainty. These are leaders who embrace adaptability, self-reflection, and continuous learning. They have the emotional intelligence to listen to others, yet possess the confidence to make the decisions that count.
