Harold Tran left a career in the healthcare industry to pursue an online MBA at Santa Clara University’s Leavey School of Business. His goal in doing so was to continue to do good in his community and help people on an even larger scale. He shares why he thinks doing an MBA can help people do good in the business world.
Harold believes that business leaders can use their position to do good in the world. Instead of making the mistake of assuming that everything is about money and financial bottom lines, they have the opportunity to lead by example and prioritize humanitarian concerns.
Harold asserts, “People are affected by the things that business leaders decide. When a leader decides that profits are the most important, in the corporate world that’s important, but when you start to see people just as numbers, that starts to become a problem. Part of why I wanted to go into business was to solve [those kinds of] humanitarian problems.” (00:38)
One of the biggest reasons why doing an MBA equips graduates to make a positive impact in the business world is because they produce well-rounded leaders. Well-rounded leaders go beyond just getting things done, they’re experts at working with and guiding the people around them towards a common goal.
Harold graduated from the University of Berkeley with a degree in biochemistry and psychology in 2012. He then pursued a career in the healthcare industry and started working as an emergency medical technician (EMT).
“I wanted to help people, and being very idealistic, I figured that healthcare was the [way] to go. I was an EMT, and as much as I loved helping people, I wanted to make a bigger impact,” Harold explains. (00:16)
This realization ultimately culminated in Harold making the decision to go back to school and pursue an online MBA.
“Solving a person’s [day-to-day] problems is great, but what I want to do is solve larger problems,” he says. (00:28)
