The Distinctive Japanese Approach to Leadership

Japanese business leadership, with its innovative methodologies and forward-thinking strategies, has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s economic success. Practices like Kaizen, which emphasizes continuous improvement, and frameworks like Ikigai, guiding individuals to discern their life’s purpose, are just a few examples of Japan’s unique contributions to the global business landscape.

While these philosophies have played a role in shaping Japan’s economic narrative, institutions like the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (NUCB) further enrich this legacy. Located in Nagoya, a central industrial hub, NUCB Business School stands out for its commitment to blending practical wisdom with academic knowledge.

We had the privilege of discussing this harmonious approach with Kenji Yokoyama, NUCB Business School’s Dean. He highlighted the school’s dedication to fostering a deep understanding of both global and local business practices. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese philosophies and modern management techniques, NUCB Business School prepares its students to navigate the complexities of today’s business world, embodying the true spirit of Japanese business leadership.

Harmonizing Wisdom with Knowledge

At NUCB, the blending of wisdom and knowledge is key. The institution’s Global MBA program, available in English and Japanese, employs case-method education. This distinctive pedagogy not only imparts knowledge but also fosters depth of understanding and wisdom. This equips students with the finesse to aptly employ their learned skills and insights in real-life situations.

As Dean Yokoyama puts it, traditional lecture-based education primarily provides knowledge and skills, which are essential. However, the case method offers something more: wisdom. Wisdom is distinct from mere knowledge. Without wisdom, one cannot effectively apply their knowledge and skills in real-world situations. This emphasis on wisdom through the case method is what makes the NUCB MBA program truly unique. (01:06)

Nagoya: A Blend of History, Culture, and Industry

Location is important when looking for a suitable place for an MBA. Japanese culture and history attract many international students to Japan, but there’s much more to explore than the rich heritage.

At NUCB, students get the chance to immerse themselves in Nagoya’s history and culture. The city, strategically positioned between Tokyo and Osaka, has a population of 2.3 million. Nagoya presents a vibrant education setting for students eager to immerse themselves in a Japanese business milieu.

Nagoya is home to Japan’s largest industrial zone, the Central Industrial Area. This proximity provides NUCB students unparalleled access to some of the world’s leading industrial giants. Companies like Toyota, known for revolutionizing automobile manufacturing with its Toyota Production System; Mitsubishi, a diversified conglomerate with interests ranging from aerospace to finance; and Kawasaki, a major player in heavy industries, are all headquartered or have significant operations in the region.

Sharing his view on the location, Dean Yokoyama says, “We have a lot of history, we have a Japanese legacy… In addition to that, as I said, we are in the midst of industrial areas you’ll be able to enjoy and that kind of industrial atmosphere. Another thing is that prices are quite reasonable.” (02:55)

The cost of living makes Nagoya an attractive choice for students. While Tokyo is renowned for its global appeal and bustling urban life, it’s also one of the most expensive cities in the world. In contrast, Nagoya offers a more affordable living experience. On average, living costs in Nagoya, including rent, are estimated to be 20-30% lower than in Tokyo. This means students can enjoy a high standard of living without the exorbitant price tag associated with Tokyo.

NUCB offers merit-based scholarships making studying in Japan even more affordable. It is also proactive in providing students with ample job opportunities, both part-time during their studies and full-time after graduation.

From Japanese Cultural Enthusiasts to Global Business Leaders

NUCB is proud of its diverse student body. International students are usually drawn to Japan by its iconic popular culture. “Most of them, frankly speaking, they like Japanese animations, Japanese manga, Japanese food, Japanese culture, Japanese beauty. That’s why they come,” says Dean Yokoyama. (05:41)

While their initial attraction might be cultural, at NUCB, the process of education takes hold regardless of their original motivation. At the end of it, all international students graduate with a clear sense of purpose and skills to serve as global business leaders.

The school’s diversity is further enriched by the university’s collaborations with international business schools and cross-cultural exchange programs. The partnerships include McGill University in Canada, EDHEC Business School in France, and HHL Leipzig in Germany. Such collaborations serve to hone a global business perspective.

NUCB’s Formula for Japanese Business Leadership Education

NUCB is a blueprint for contemporary Japanese business education. The school seamlessly integrates revered traditions with innovative teaching methods. Located in an area that celebrates its rich history while also being a hub of industrial advancement, NUCB is dedicated to shaping genuine leaders ready to navigate the ever-shifting global business landscape.

As local and international students embark on their transformative journey within NUCB’s halls, they acquire business skills and cultivate both wisdom and knowledge.
